  • Before DVdm opened this case, I already strongly suspected that Smeef89 was another sockpuppet of Danieleb82, and intended to keep my eye on things. Prompted by this SPI I checked much more thoroughly, and discovered a lot more evidence. It was 100% clear that Danieleb82, Gogardendeep, and the IP address listed above were the same person, and also that the person had used a number of other IP addresses, including 95.199.150.76 (previously blocked by Alexf for block evasion), 95.199.0.125, 95.199.13.246, 95.199.0.125, 95.195.223.142, 95.195.216.204, & 95.195.210.108. It also seemed 90% clear that Smeef89 was also the same person, so I waited for him or her to edit again, and very helpfully his or her next few edits provided evidence which fits in so perfectly with evidence about the other accounts and IP addresses which I had found in places other than English Wikipedia that it is now 100% certain. I shall block Smeef89 and tag the accounts. Unfortunately the two IP ranges that I found include many edits which do not appear to be this editor, so a long term range block is not possible, but 151.177.184.88 does not appear to have any edits from anyone else, so that is easier. Similar editing patterns on articles by the band Rush and other older rock bands, especially this odd process of redirecting album articles then removing the redirect, causing problems for new page patrollers (see [1]).

Examples: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Signals_(Rush_album)&diff=prev&oldid=855038327 by the IP and https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Eye_of_the_Tiger_(album)&diff=prev&oldid=845247814 by Gogardendeep.

I include Ballisticerts here because of edits to many of the same pages as the IP, such as recently created articles The Body Electric (Rush song) and Terrifying (song). StarcheerspeaksnewslostwarsTalk to me 19:00, 15 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Starcheerspeaksnewslostwars and JamesBWatson: Based on the block and comments, there appears to be at least one earlier account than Gogardendeep. Can either or both of you elaborate, please?--Bbb23 (talk) 19:27, 15 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Bbb23: Ah, yes. Doing further research to refresh my memory, the master appears to be User:Danieleb82, and a couple more IPs include User:213.89.84.232 (who has been blocked as well) and User:213.89.76.95. Should I revise the above? Thanks. StarcheerspeaksnewslostwarsTalk to me 20:23, 15 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks; please don't revise.--Bbb23 (talk) 20:25, 15 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I apologize, Danieleb82 has already been investigated previously (see Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Danieleb82/Archive). Thanks again. StarcheerspeaksnewslostwarsTalk to me 20:26, 15 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I can confirm that I to identified Danieleb82 as an earlier account of Gogardendeep. The editor who uses the pseudonym "JamesBWatson" (talk) 21:03, 15 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Directly after IP 158.174.5.52 was blocked in mid September, the account Dimplebag81 was created to focus on the same rock band topics, especially to create new articles, which requires a username. When IP 158.174.5.52 was blocked again in early October, Dimplebag81 stepped in again to continue the focus. One example of a connection is that Dimplebag81 showed up to restore a reverted edit by IP 158.174.5.52.[2][3] And IP 217.213.65.240 restored something from Dimplebag81.[4] Checkuser requested to confirm Dimplebag81 as a sock of Danieleb82. Binksternet (talk) 14:45, 5 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

More proof can be seen at an article created by Dimplebag81, then edited by Swedish IP 217.213.65.160 just a few minutes later.[5]

  • The behavioral investigation between the accused sock puppet account (Dimplebag81) and the master (Danieleb82) were inconclusive. They both edited the same articles many times, but nothing beyond that were similar in nature, location, style, references or links, or other similarities. The timeline of the edits made to The Endless Enigma between Dimplebag81 and two CU-blocked IP addresses listed here (217.213.65.160 and 217.213.65.240) seem much too close to be a mere coincidence - especially the edit by 217.213.65.160, which was made only 6 minutes after the previous edit made by Dimplebag81 and 15 minutes before Dimplebag81's next edit afterwards. Dimplebag81 also made the exact same edit as 217.213.68.8 (another CU-blocked IP listed here) to Counterparts (album) (diffs: 1, 2), as well as on The Studio Albums 1989–2007 within only two hours of each other and when another editor reverted the edit by the IP (diffs: 1, 2). Similar behavior can also be found on Different Stages (Rush album), Signals (Rush album), and others. The similarities put together make me confident that the accused sock puppet account is connected to a number of CU-blocked IPs and ranges listed here and with comments that they were solely used by the block master. Hence, I am blocking the account for sock puppetry and related to the similar edits I found and detailed in this comment. The remaining IPs listed have mostly already been CU-blocked and this SPI report can now be closed. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 13:48, 17 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The new account and 2 IPs listed appear to be the same, editing many of the same articles that User:Buttletsaregone just created. [see edit history of Between the Wheels, Lessons (song), All the World's a Stage (album), The One Where Everybody Finds Out, and Africa (Toto song)]. Similarities to previous blocked accounts: All tend to restore redirects into articles or create new articles for classic rock bands and albums (Rush, Emerson, Lake and Palmer, Black Sabbath, to name a few)

More sockpuppetry. Edits focusing mostly on classic rock articles as previous socks (from Rush to Pearl Jam), plus this identical edit for Sabineishot as last sock Buttletsaregone. Similar pattern of restoring redirected articles with suspect references: Blood (Pearl Jam song) in May 2018 by master Danieleb82 and recent restoration of Porch (Pearl Jam song) by IP 77.218.241.179. This editor appears to have gone through the deleted contributions of Buttletsaregone. Articles re-created include Freeze (Rush song), Different Strings, Territories (song), Kid Gloves (Rush song), The Enemy Within (song), The Body Electric (song), Losing It (Rush song), Digital Man, Chemistry (Rush song), The Weapon (song) and Something for Nothing (song). This is very obvious; check-user requested in case there are also other active accounts. Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 16:54, 15 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Similar pattern of restoring redirected music articles with dubious references. (Also a whole lot of evidence on Reddit, but I understand that can't be used. Just ask if you want to see it.) Popcornduff (talk) 01:55, 20 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Filing on behalf of Binksternet who reported these IPs at ANI. Their complaint was as follows:

Danieleb82 was indeffed in May 2018 for disruption in music articles – see Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Danieleb82/Archive. By now, after creating so many socks and using IPs for block evasion, Danieleb82 is effectively site-banned.

In the past few months, I've seen Danieleb82 make hundreds of edits using IPs from Sweden. Examples of disruption include genre warring[12][13][14] and edit-warring a redirect into a non-notable song article.[15][16][17][18][19]

The involved IPs come from multiple domains. I'm writing here to see if anyone has an idea that would diminish the disruption from this person. Involved IPs listed below. Several rangeblocks? Binksternet (talk) 10:22, 2 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

  • The 77.218 range is clearly the same user, but unless they also have an interest in warships it seems it's cycled to a different user within the last couple days. I will keep an eye on it. If they start editing music articles again, any admin should block anon-only for as long as they wish.
  • The 83.185 range is blocked for 6 months.
  • The other discrete IPs were probably also used by the same user, but none have more than a handful of edits and none have edited in the last month. Ivanvector (Talk/Edits) 13:57, 2 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

  • Blocking a mobile IPv6 2 days after the fact won't do much. Rosguill, as an FYI as an administrator, if you are comfortable enough to cite WP:DUCK here, you are free to block on your own. Administrators can block for any policy violation, including WP:SOCK at their discretion subject to admin accountability. IP reports at SPI don't really ever get addressed (CUs don't like dealing with them for optics reasons, and they're usually not active by the time clerks are around.)
Also, re: IPv6, I'm not particularly familiar with this ISP, but if you want to look at the behaviour of the range that may be associated with it/block the user in question, I've written a quick and dirty guide to IPv6 range blocks at WP:/64. Closing this case for now from an SPI standpoint. You can take any admin action you feel necessary. TonyBallioni (talk) 06:04, 21 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Pengo82 shares the same numeric suffix as Danieleb82. Mappy1983 appeared directly after Pengo82 was reverted several times. Elliot Washington makes the same sorts of game article edits, adding to the list of platforms.[22][23] DrewMan2112 asserted on their talk page that they had edited many of the articles which have been created from redirect by Danieleb82 and socks.[24]

Pengo82 revived an old article, Fucking Hostile, that had been created from a redirect by Special:Contributions/2A00:801:301:D438:4CAF:4A54:B7C3:3C6B, a WP:LOUTSOCK of Danieleb82 who was using dozens of Swedish IPs to create song articles from redirects, including songs such as this one from the album Vulgar Display of Power. Pengo82 started with the same references and text from 2019, even retaining the 2019 access dates.[25] Swedish IPs have recently created articles from redirects in the signature style of Danieleb82.[26][27]

Pengo82 has two direct intersections with Danieleb82: one is at the song article The Green Manalishi (With the Two Prong Crown) where Danieleb82 made the Judas Priest version more prominent,[28] followed six years later by Pengo82 expanding the Judas Priest section.[29] New user Mappy1983 restored Pengo82's text.[30]

The other article is Technical Ecstasy where Danieleb82 added links to song articles he had written,[31] followed six years later by Pengo82 expanding the genres.[32]

Checkuser requested to check the recent users against each other. Swedish IP range Special:Contributions/2A00:801:782:B3D9:0:0:0:0/64 is too stale to check, but it was involved late last year. Recent IP range Binksternet (talk) 17:56, 25 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
